March meeting

Saturday, we had our AGM and March meeting. These pics are from our show and tell. Above: a beautiful hand embroidered piece by Zena. You can click on the pic for a closer view.

This is a work in progress by Jan. It is her take on last months workshop, Painting with Fabric, presented by Dorothy which covered using layered fabrics, stitch, burning back, etc. to make a composition based on a photo. She is also continuing on with techniques in this work from Liz Maidment's workshop which she did at Fibres West last year.

This wonderful, dimensional piece by Helen was done last year for an exhibition. She brought it in to show us that 3D work doesn't necessarily have to be sculptural but can be a framed work. 3D is the theme for our exhibition, entitled 'Dimensions', in November 2012.

Judith brought these lovely watercolour cards she had done.

The Red Challenge: We have been set a challenge to make red works on small canvas boards using our own choice of subject, style and technique that can be hung in a line for the exhibition.

These are by Liz. She has used knitting, cording, beading and stitching to make the panels which have been attached to the prepared canvas boards with stitch so that they could be removed for cleaning if necessary.
Some interesting techniques on the backgrounds too.

Heat transfer dyes were used to create these fabrics that Iris will use in her red challenge pieces.

Margaret P's red works with an African theme. She has since added hand embroidery to these. Apologies for the shadow on the left one.

Dorothy's red challenge piece - she made the apple too.
Most people worked on their red pieces at the meeting so next month we should see lots more.
I have not started mine but I'm feeling inspired by seeing what people were doing.

Piney Lakes & an online gallery of quilts

The Designing Women group meets at the Piney Lakes centre which is surrounded by bushland and a sculpture walk. These pics were taken when we went looking for inspiration at one of our meetings. Above and below: a cork tree.

Congratulations to Stephanie - her quilt 'Staircase to the Moon' was selected for Beneath the Souithern Sky. Have a look here for the online gallery - some fabulous quilts. The exhibition will be in Perth at the May Quilt and Craft fair at the Convention Centre as well as lots of venues in the eastern states, NZ and USA.
