The theme for May's meeting was Tyvek. Judith had managed to source a roll for Designing Women which was available for members to purchase at a very good price. She had also spent time doing lots of sample pieces and experiments to show us what could be done with the tyvek - above & following.
Judith did some demos of painting and shrinking tyvek using an iron and I was asked to demo using a heat gun to shrink the tyvek and making beads with a heat gun and then a soldering iron - above and below:
The member retrospective was presented by Jan Campbell who has certainly had a full and interesting life despite some ongoing health issues. Jan had enjoyed a long career in nursing, specializing in neonates, then she decided to do a visual arts degree at Edith Cowan. These 2 paths crossed in her photography minor. She showed us a folder of photos she had taken of babies and their parents while working in the neonatal unit which were powerful and moving.
Jan also showed us some of her dolls, traditional quilts, folk art painting and lots of great work from her university course including beautiful printed, dyed and batik fabrics.
She brought her quilt that was featured on the cover of the latest Stitched & Bound exhibition catalogue (above) as well as her piece from the last WAFTA exhibition (below) to show us.

In addition to everything else, Jan Oldham presented a mini workshop on how to wrap a stone using crochet and copper wire. Unfortunately I don't have pics of her beautiful examples to show but several people managed to finish their pieces (mine is still in progress)
Thank you Margaret F for emailing these photos taken on her IPhone.
Next month we will be working on Blue pieces for our display at the August Craft Fair. We will each bring a brown paper bag with a variety of blue fabric, threads, beads, etc. for swapping - the challenge is to use the pieces in the bag we receive in our challenge piece.
