Designing Women is a textile group which meets on the second Saturday of each month at Piney Lakes Environmental Centre, Murdoch, Western Australia. Membership is capped at 25 because of the space available at our meeting place but applications from prospective members are most welcome.
The group has been meeting since 2001 following workshops held at Heathcote in Applecross We were fortunate to obtain grants and sponsorship from the City of Melville in our formative stages.
Thirteen years later, we continue to develop. Members practise a variety of fibre arts and offer artistic and technical support to each other. An excellent reference library has been established from which members can borrow.
Meetings are held from 9.30am until 3pm, with the business part usually during lunch. Members will often run a workshop for the group, give a presentation on a technique they have researched or their own textile work. Additionally, we invite one or two outside tutors to give a workshop each year.
A weekend textile retreat is held each year at Dwellingup for members who wish to attend.
We also enjoy show and tell and some organised challenges, particularly when working towards our exhibitions - an important aspect of Designing Women, held every second year.
Members are expected to contribute at least one of their works for the exhibition. The last exhibition, 'Dimensions' was held at Nysiztor Studio Gallery in 2012 and was very successful, with many sales and positive comments. The next, 'Seams and Layers' will be in October 2014.
